Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions need a liver transplant?
A liver transplant is considered for end-stage cirrhosis, acute liver failure, selected liver cancers and certain metabolic or bile duct diseases. In children, biliary atresia is a leading cause. It is usually the last option, after other treatments can no longer protect liver function.
What causes liver failure in India?
Common causes include hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related liver disease, and fatty liver disease, which is rising sharply in urban India. Autoimmune and bile duct conditions also contribute. Many people have no symptoms until the damage is advanced.
Can fatty liver lead to a liver transplant?
In a minority of people, yes. Fatty liver can progress to inflammation, scarring and cirrhosis over years. Controlling weight, blood sugar and cholesterol early lowers that risk considerably.
What tests are done before a liver transplant?
Evaluation usually includes blood tests, CT or MRI scans, endoscopy, heart and lung assessment, and infection screening. Its purpose is to confirm that transplant is needed, that the patient can safely undergo surgery, and to plan the operation.
Does the donor need the same blood group?
Usually the donor and recipient are blood-group compatible. In selected cases, ABO-incompatible transplants are possible at experienced centres with additional preparation, but this carries added complexity.
Can children have liver transplants?
Yes. Children with conditions such as biliary atresia or acute liver failure can undergo transplant, often using a portion of a parent’s liver. Early referral improves outcomes, so delay matters in infants.

Dr. Ankur recently did gallbladder surgery for my 80+ year-old grandfather, Mr. Bhooraram. Because of his age, we were pretty nervous, but Dr. Ankur took every precaution and the whole surgery went incredibly smoothly. He’s not only highly professional but also genuinely warm and friendly, which put our family at ease. Mr. Bhooraram is doing great and wants to thank him so much for his amazing work! Highly recommend him.Posted on Google![]()
